What Skills Do I Need To Be A Stonemason?

Stonemasonry is an ancient and noble art, and working as a stonemason can be an incredibly satisfying and rewarding career. However, do you know what skills these professionals need to make sure they're successful in their day-to-day lives? If you're interested in a career in stonemasonry, you might want to make sure you tick the following boxes:

As With Most Things, You're Going To Need To Be Able To Work As A Team
This is definitely true of many jobs, but you will need to be able to work as a team to make sure you're going to be successful in your stonemasonry career. There are as many as five different distinct types of stonemasons who will all work on the same block of stone between it's extraction from the ground and its final installation as part of a building or structure, so you're going to need to be able to cooperate with other people to make sure the final vision is consistently achieved.

Further to that, your work is likely to be highly delicate, and even a small mistake can become a major blemish. To that end, you'll need to be able to accurately follow designs, and it's in your best interests to make sure you'll be able to diligently follow the commands of your supervisors.

Practical Skills Are Advised
Stonemasonry has come a long way since it's ancient origins and technology definitely makes it much easier, but that doesn't mean there isn't still a physical component involved. Some parts of the job still require significant amounts of dexterity and strength, and they should not be underestimated. If you're going to work in a career in stonemasonry, it might be best if you make sure you remain in good physical health.

Creativity Is Also Valued
At the same time, there is also a high market for a creative individual in these jobs. Someone needs to create the designs that will be imprinted onto the stones, and it's best if that work is done by someone who intimately understands the imprinting process, its strengths, and its limitations. There definitely won't be a shortage of inspiration, either, as stonemasons are typically working in outdoor environments; you'll have plenty of time to see some sights, appreciate some beauty, and then go out and create your own.

Ready To Begin?
Maybe, having read all that, you've decided a career in stonemasonry is for you. Maybe, instead, you've decided that you're going to leave it to the professionals, though maybe someone in management at your company has been talking about hiring a stonemason for a little while now. Either way, it sounds like it's time to get in touch with the professionals. Here at the RJC Group, we've got years of experience working as the city's preferred choice for all stonemasonry, and we're more than happy to answer any questions you might have about our craft.
