Scope of works: The Central Station Metro works included the remodeling of the lower Northern Concourse, focusing on improving access beneath the century-old Central Electric Building, which serves as the entrance to Central Station from the Eddy Avenue forecourt.
RJC Group has successfully supplied and installed the 515 pieces of sandstone. The process began with the architectural and as-built drawings of the structure. Based on these, detailed shop drawings of the archway were created, including a 3D model of each individual stone and a custom structural fixing design. Offsite, the stone blocks were shaped and profiled using a combination of a wire saw and a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) robot-operated water jet tool. Depending on their location within the archway, the stones were securely fixed in place using stainless steel mechanical or epoxy anchors. Specialized lifting equipment was utilized to minimize manual handling of the stones, which typically weigh between 45 and 60 kilograms. However, certain capping stones could weigh up to 400 kilograms.
Over time, the new stone will naturally oxidise, matching the tone of the stone above and reviving the building's distinctive character.
