Corporation Building Hay St

Project Type: Stonemasonry and Heritage Building Restoration

Location: Market Street, Sydney

Year Completed: 2022

Scope of works: Also known as Municipal Building, originally constructed in 1894 from designs by City Architect George McRae and it formed part of the adjacent New Belmore Markets.

The early Federation Anglo-Dutch style design showcases intricate brick detailing, stylized design motifs, parapets, and striking roof features. Originally serving as a building with offices, refreshment rooms, and toilets for the clerks and produce agents at the New Belmore Markets, the structure now stands as an entertainment space for the arts. Over the decades, the Corporation Building has adapted to the changing retail and business needs of the area. The scope included restoring the buildings façade and roof to its original design, slate works to the roof and conical tower, replacing the corner shop entry to match the original design building out of sandstone.

Duration: 8 months

Client: The City of Sydney
